How to use

  1. Type the sound in romaji (e.g. konnichiwa, arigatou, maiku). A Japanese keyboard is not required.
  2. Hiragana and katakana appear as you type. Use hiragana for ordinary words, and katakana for foreign names and loanwords (maiku → マイク).
  3. Copy the script you need. For kanji candidates, continue to Romaji → Kanji.

Spellings that change the result

  1. Long vowels: tokyo is ときょ. For Tokyo, type toukyou. Kyoto is kyouto. Osaka is oosaka.
  2. ん before a vowel or y: type nn or an apostrophe. konnichiwa → こんにちは. shin'ai → しんあい (shinai is しない).
  3. Small っ: double the consonant. kippu → きっぷ.
  4. The greetings konnichiwa and konbanwa are written with the particle は: こんにちは, こんばんは. Any other wa stays わ.
